However, the wrong face mask is annoying and uncomfortable. So it’s essential to know your choices.

1 – Get the Right Colors (Light Wavelengths)

LED lights output a range of wavelengths. A 633 nm LED, for example, can output 623 nm to 643 nm. The 633 nm is just the peak power of that bulb.
LEDs output a range of wavelengths, and human skin absorbs many light colors.
Precision is just not crucial for facial therapy.
Acne masks should have red, blue, and infrared light. Aging masks should have red and infrared light. The exact wavelengths are not going to change your results.
2 – Red Light Therapy Can Affect Pigmentation

Of course, the face mask can’t be as weak as a Christmas light. But you don’t need or want 100 mW/cm2 irradiance to get a therapeutic benefit.
Masks have benefits over red light therapy panels.
A mask holds the light to the skin. Since the light cannot reflect away, it is absorbed.
Panels lose light to distance and reflection.
Therefore they have to be stronger than masks.
6 – 5-20 Minutes is a Reasonable Treatment Time
Manufacturers are notoriously bad at measuring the strength of their red light therapy devices.
Rather than relying on “irradiance” numbers, go by how long the treatment time is.
5-20 minutes is a reasonable time to use the mask daily (or every other day).
A device that takes longer is probably weaker.
7 – Some Masks Make It Hard to See a TV or Phone
Marketers pushing bright light do not understand the science of red light therapy.
Very bright light interferes with vision. With some masks, your eyes are flooded with light. It’s hard to see your TV or phone.
